Former Consul
Rob NeSmith ('11) was nominated over the summer as one of the top three
finalists for the International Balfour Award (IBA). Each year the IBA is
awarded to the most outstanding graduating senior and is the highest
undergraduate honor in the Sigma Chi. The award has been given annually since
it was created in 1929 and is based on excellence in four criteria:
scholarship, character, Fraternity service, and campus leadership. At
Birmingham- Southern, NeSmith served in numerous student organizations and was
a dedicated leader to the chapter, serving as Consul, House Manager, and Social
Chair. He graduated with cum laude honors in History and a 3.5 GPA. Internationally, NeSmith gained recognition as one of two undergraduate
representatives to the Executive Committee of Sigma Chi in 2010-2011. Although
NeSmith did not win the IBA, his nomination to the top three speaks highly of
our chapter and his remarkable leadership and service to Sigma Chi both locally
and internationally.
When asked
about the unique experience, NeSmith had to say, "Being selected as a finalist for the International Balfour Award was a
truly wonderful experience. There are thousands of great brothers in Sigma Chi
and having the opportunity to represent them as a finalist for the award
alongside the other two candidates was an experience I will never forget. The
great leadership the International Fraternity has leading us into the next
biennium shows the great things Sigma Chi is capable of and why we are the
leagues ahead of the other organizations in the Greek world." As an
alumnus, NeSmith continues his path of service and leadership as a
congressional intern in Washington D.C. Again, congratulations to Rob NeSmith
on the honor and a many thanks for his remarkable service to our chapter and the
Fraternity.
IH,
Hart Benton ('14)
