Two Brothers Attend Horizons in Snowbird, Utah

Thumbnail
Sigma Chi offers its undergrads a number of opportunities to grow and learn during the summer. Perhaps the most unique among these is Horizons, a week-long leadership development program in Snowbird, Utah. This year, Chi Chi brothers Jay Dunn '12 and Andrew Street '13 traveled out west to take part in the distinctive course.

These brothers applied in the spring, and were selected from a pool of hundreds of applicants for a spot in one of four sessions. Dunn and Street give the Chi Chi chapter four participants in the past two years, and five in the past three.

Since 1999, Horizons has allowed rising sophomore and junior brothers a chance to develop their leadership potential. It also grants brothers an opportunity to interact with Sigma Chis from across the continent. Participants go through a week of reflection and exercises intended to help them better understand their own strengths, weaknesses, and individual character.

Said Dunn of his experience, "Throughout the week, I learned more than just lessons on how to be a better leader. I learned how to be a better person." He especially valued the opportunity to learn from brothers from other chapters. "The leadership skills of the exceptional brothers gathered there made my experience significantly more memorable and appreciable," he added.

Street also took a great deal from the experience, noting that "I learned more about myself and my fraternity in one week than I ever could have hoped for. Horizons is, without a doubt, one of the best leadership development curricula in the world."

In the past, Chi Chi brothers Adam Israel '06, Drew Phillips '09, Mitchell Dean '11, Wes George '11, and Daniel Thomas '12 have benefited from the Horizons experience as well. Steve Davidson '96, the Managing Director of Sigma Chi's Risk Management Foundation, has served as an alumni coordinator for the program.

Horizons is offered completely free of charge, including travel costs, to undergraduates thanks to the generosity of four alumni brothers. Our Horizons alumni and the chapter as a whole extend our gratitude to these brothers for such an incredible gift. Our chapter directly benefits from the skills and understanding that our brothers gain from the week in Utah. The Chi Chi chapter looks forward to sending more brothers to Horizons again next summer.

In Hoc,
Wes George '11
