Chi Chi Wins Peterson Award at BLTW

Thumbnail
For the first time in nine years, the Chi Chi chapter of Sigma Chi has been recognized with the highest honor the international fraternity bestows on a chapter: the Peterson Award.

At Balfour Leadership Training Workshop in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Saturday July 31st, 2010, brothers of the Chi Chi chapter accepted the award from Grand Consul Wayne Tucker '85 (Eta Omega - Baylor).

Below is a description of the Peterson Award from the international fraternity:

"The Peterson Significant Chapter Award, sponsored annually by the Sigma Chi Foundation, is the highest honor bestowed upon an undergraduate chapter. Named for Past Grand Consul J. Dwight Peterson, Indiana 1919, the award recognizes excellent performance by chapters in all major areas of operation and programming. For many years, the Peterson plaque has been a symbol of dedication, idealism, and achievement."

"Award criteria are assigned on an objective scale and encompass the entire gamut of chapter activities, from financial stability and recruitment to chapter and member reputation to Ritual and initiation performance. Because chapter operations vary among campuses and chapters, each chapter measures itself against these absolute Sigma Chi standards, rather than against other chapters."

It was the first time since the 2000-2001 officer year that the Chi Chi chapter has received the Peterson Award. Out of over 230 applicants, our chapter was one of 38 winners. The award reflects the chapter's efforts during the 2009-2010 officer year.

Chi Chi brothers Thomas Ray '12, Jay Dunn '12, Hunt Shepard '13 and Paterson Graham '13 attended the workshop at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. There, they did strategic planning for the upcoming year, both for the chapter and the Alabama Northern province. They also attended specific officer training sessions for different chapter positions. The chapter thanks these brothers for their hard work and commitment to Sigma Chi.

The chapter extends its deep gratitude to the international fraternity for having received the prestigious honor. It also thanks Grand Praetor Michael Ciatto '08 (Omicron - Dickinson College), Ford Ray '08, and Rish Spurlock '06 for their tireless effort to support the chapter in every way possible in the past year and going forward.

Our chapter has built a considerable amount of momentum for continued progress in the upcoming year. We look forward the challenge of bringing home the Peterson Award again at next year's Balfour Leadership Training Workshop.

In Hoc,
Wes George '11
