Derby Days 2010 Raises $5,800 for CMN & Huntsman

Thumbnail
The 2010 installment of Sigma Chi Derby Days, benefiting the Chi Chi chapter's local philanthropy, the Children's Hospital of Birmingham, as well as a Sigma Chi national philanthropy, the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, took place from March 29th - April 1st, 2010. Over $5,800 was raised to go towards these causes, as well as the winner's philanthropic organization of choice.

Birmingham-Southern's seven national sororities (Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Kappa Delta, Pi Beta Phi, and Zeta Tau Alpha) partnered with Sigma Chi for a week of activities and fundraising. The week's schedule included these events:
  • Monday: Momma Goldberg's Deli in Homewood (a portion of the proceeds from that night went towards Children's Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Institute)
  • Tuesday: Jersey Day (sororities wore their jersey or a Sigma Chi shirt to receive points for their team)
  • Wednesday: Date Auction (brothers were auctioned off to sororities as dates with all proceeds going to the philanthropies)
  • Wednesday: Visit to Children's Hospital of Birmingham (toys were collected throughout the week for brothers and sorority representatives to deliver to the hospital - over 800 toys raised!)
  • Thursday: Band Party at the Sigma Chi house feat. Big Nekkid (proceeds from tickets added to the week's total)
At the Thursday night band party, Alpha Omicron Pi was announced as the winning team of Derby Days 2010. The chapter would like to thank their Derby Darling, Meredith Dubberly, for her hard work in organizing her team's time, effort, and resources. The chapter also thanks all of the other Derby Darlings, as well as all of the Greek women who helped to make the week a huge success.

Brothers John Michael Chappell '12 (Derby Daddy 2010) and Lee Hopf '11 (Derby Daddy 2011) deserve much of the credit for the week's success. From organizing the events, to tabulating scores and proceeds, their dedicated service to our chapter and its philanthropic efforts is truly commendable. A big thank you from the chapter to these brothers for their tireless efforts.

In Hoc,
Wes George '11
